Kuala Lumpur, 13 March 2013

AirAsia continues to nurture young Malaysian talent, Zulfahmi

AirAsia, the world’s best low cost carrier is proud to continue its support for sole Malaysian MotoGP rider, Zulfahmi Khairuddin in his 2013 campaign in the Moto3 category for the world championship.

This will be the fourth full season for the 21 year old in the MotoGP. AirAsia began sponsoring Zulfahmi since his debut race at the Malaysian Grand Prix back in 2009 through the AirAsia Malaysia Wildcard Program. Since then, AirAsia has been instrumental in playing an active role in making his dream in the MotoGP come true.

The rider who is better known as Fahmi surpassed all expectations and had a stellar season last year. Riding for Team AirAsia-SIC-Ajo Motorsport, he made history by becoming the first Malaysian rider to qualify in pole position and made it to the podium twice. At the end of the season, he was ranked 7th in the championship with 128 points; a feat no other Asean rider has achieved before.

AirAsia Berhad Chief Executive Officer, Aireen Omar said, “The sponsorship is part of AirAsia’s ongoing commitment to nurture young talents and provide a platform for them to excel globally. Fahmi’s achievements have proven that with proper support and hard work, Malaysia is able to produce our own heroes and stars. He now serves as an inspiration to all.”

“Dreams are important as it is one of the catalysts for success and we are glad to have been part of Fahmi’s dreams all this while. We are extremely proud of his achievements and hope that he will continue to create history and get more podium finishes in the upcoming season.”

Zulfahmi Khairuddin said “AirAsia have been supporting me since the beginning of my MotoGP career and I am extremely happy that they will continue their support. I am grateful of this as it has helped made my dream come true. I will surely do my best this year to make Malaysia proud.”

This year Fahmi will be racing in the Red Bull KTM Ajo team together with Spaniard Luis Salom and Arthur Sissis of Australia in the Moto3 category. The 2013 season begins with the Grand Prix of Qatar at the Losail Circuit from 4 to 7 April and will feature 18 races including the AirAsia Grand Prix of Japan.
