Travel to Manado
Most tourists regard Bunaken National Marine Park and Lembeh Strait as the world’s diving mecca, but you don't want to miss Manado's other attractions as well. Live on the edge by trekking the twin volcano Mount Lokon and Mount Empung or go whitewater rafting at Sawangan, Airmadidi and Timbukar. One-of-a-kind wildlife like Babirusa and the cute, bug-eyed Pygmy Tarsier can be encountered at Tangkoko National Park. Manado’s Yesus Memberkati (Christ Blessing) is said to be the tallest Jesus statue in Asia and the 4th tallest in the world. Minahasa people, the natives of Manado, are famous for their love of singing and dancing. They no longer keep the dead in a waruga (stone coffin) but they still celebrate by drinking saguer (palm wine) and eating cakalang fufu (smoked skipjack tuna), babi rica-rica (pork in spicy sauce) and even exotic meats like paniki (fruit bat) and kawok (white-tailed forest rat)! Aside from the gazillions of churches in Manado, their stages are its many fiestas and festivals--Tomohon Flower Festival being one of them.
