Hangzhou has been revered for centuries, most especially for its UNESCO World Heritage Site - West Lake. Surrounded by pavilions, tea farms, gardens and mountains, you will feel like you’ve stepped into a beautiful Chinese painting. Hangzhou’s must-sees include the towering Baochu Pagoda, Xixi Wetland Park, Liuhe (Six Harmonies) Pagoda, Huqingyutang Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum, and Lingyin Temple--the most famous and influential Buddhist monastery in southeastern China. For a taste of Hangzhou’s regional cuisine, the Beggar’s Chicken, West Lake Vinegar Fish and Longjing Shrimp are great dishes to start off with. Sweet and savoury snacks line Hefang Street, also notable for its shopping. At nightfall, noted film director Zhang Yimou’s grand stage production of Impression West Lake (music by Kitaro) takes place with the lake as the stage. West Lake hosts events such as the Lotus Festival in July, Osmanthus Festival in September and the International Fireworks Festival in October. The 18th day of the eighth lunar month is also special because of the Qiantang Tide-Watching Festival, where the tidal bore reaches up to 30 feet high.
