Predominantly of Chinese occupants, Sibu plays an integral part in forming the interesting ethnics of Sarawak.

Sibu, in phonetic Bahasa language, means "busy," and indeed, the second largest city of Sarawak fits this description perfectly!

The first inhabitants of Sibu were Chinese immigrants from the province of Foochow. This may just explain the vitality and prosperity of Sibu!

Chinese migrants formed a replica of their own homeland on the banks of the mighty Rajang River, the longest of its kind in Malaysia. It stretches over 640 km. A resemblance of all things Chinese can be keenly felt near the Rajang Esplanade where a century old temple stands adjacent to a seven-story pagoda. From the top, visitors enjoy a fascinating view of the Rajang River.

The Rajang River is navigable on almost its entire length. No wonder it is still the easiest way for locals to travel to the centre of Sarawak, the heart of Kapit where the Ibans reside, and, beyond Kapit, to the lands of the Orang Ulu.
