Vientiane is the capital city of Laos with an estimated population of 450,000 in the city. It is located on a bend along the Mekong River, a river which forms the lifeline of the country. Vientiane, which means "City of Sandalwood" in Lao language, is the administrative, commerce and culture capital of Laos. It is sometimes known as Viang chan or Wiang chan.

Vientiane, a more relaxed capital city than most of its South East Asian counterparts, offers visitors many interesting historical sites and Buddhist monasteries, scenic countryside and lively markets. The people of Vientiane are generally friendly and easy going and hospitable.
