Train journeys, most certainly, offer breathtaking scenery, but get ready for spectacular sights when you pull into some of the world’s most amazing train stations – symbols of past empires that have survived wars and the onslaught of urban development.

When I heard I was going to Ho Chi Minh City for the weekend, images of old Saigon – beautiful French colonial buildings and wide tree-lined boulevards – came to mind. Friends were quick to warn me of the infamous traffic, but I paid little heed to their advice, my thoughts lingering instead on romanticised portraits of the city, stirred in part by Graham Greene’s portrayal of Saigon in The Quiet American.

When my car pulled up to the JW Marriott Hotel Hanoi, I thought there had been a mistake. Perhaps my driver had misunderstood. The futuristic building looked more like something out of Star Trek than a hotel. A cantilevered structure, this incredibly sleek creation was all dramatic glass and sweeping curves. Softening the sharpness of its ultra-modern design were water fountains spraying jets into the cool air.
