Small and cosy, there were about 10 owls in the café. You have to order a drink which costs 1,000 Yen and that will give you an hour to pet and take selfies with the owls.

Fun fact 1: Owls are actually far-sighted. They cannot see things that are a few centimetres in front of them very clearly. Which explains why a lot of the owls depicted in cartoons wear glasses.

A wise looking one that is a reminiscent of Yoda. She was actually in the middle of cleaning herself, kind of like how a cat grooms itself.

Amidst the glittering neon lights from the landmark Glico Man, fragrant smells of takoyaki, and troves of folks pacing the streets of Dotonbori, Osaka, sits a happy place for animal lovers. Let’s take an inside look at an owl café – this will be a hoot!

Words and Photography: Irvin Hanni

An animal of many symbolism, owls are considered as one of the most intriguing animals on earth, cuteness factor included. Big round eyes, a heavenly coat of soft feathers, and humorous facial expressions that range from cycnical and austere to confused and hungover – owl-tastic features that makes the world go gaga. However, their nocturnal nature has made it difficult to get close to.

Thanks to the ingenuity of the Japanese who has the foresight to put together cute animals in a cafe, comes another reason to mark Japan as the ‘land of overloading kawaii-ness’ – that’s ‘cute-ness’ for those who are unaware on why the kawaii is a deciding factor in many things Japanese.

“How is this different from a zoo?”, one may ask. Well the variety of owls occupying this place is one thing. There are a snowy owl, a barn owl, a tawny owl, a little owls, and more. Would you be able to take selfies with these birds or stroke their soft heads at the zoo? Nope, you can’t, but you can totally do this here! That’s the beauty of this place.

Entrance fee of 1,000 Yen which will get you one hour inside along with a drink of your choice.
