10th December 2012 – The homegrown Malaysian football team Harimau Malaya was sent off in style on the AirAsia ‘Semangat Harimau Muda’ livery to Bangkok for their second leg of the AFF Suzuki Cup Semi-finals against Thailand. The strong contenders from up north gave Malaysia a run for their money during the 1st Semi-final leg at Bukit Jalil Stadium, where Malaysia drew 1-1 against Thailand…much to the delight of the nation! Now, for the first time, a Malaysia sports team is flown exclusively on a chartered flight to their upcoming match.
The star-studded event was graced by several guests of honour onboard including Minister of Youth and Sports Yang Berhormat Dato’ Sri Ahmad Shabery Cheek and AirAsia Group Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Kamaruddin Meranun to wish the team best of luck.
AirAsia Berhad Chief Executive Officer, Aireen Omar said, “We are very excited for the national football team. When given the opportunity to support, we seized it immediately as we believe we can positively contribute to the development of the sport and provide the platform for Malaysian team to shine. The team has wonderful potential, and has always unifies the nation, who come together as one in their support. This is definitely an initiative we are proud to be a part of and we are all looking forward to watching the game and supporting the Malaysian Tigers.”
Just in time for the match, AirAsia again flew 170 Harimau Malaya fans to Bangkok to give support to the local team, again boarding the ‘Semangat Harimau Muda’ plane on the 13th of December. All seats on the special chartered flight were snapped up by fans in just two days, where they only had to pay RM500 each for a full package including the airfare, taxes, transportation from airport to stadium as well as one hot meal for their return flight. What a deal!
Needless to say, the support from home fans was immensely tremendous. Though Harimau Malaya did not take home the trophy that night, the love and support from their fans back home as well as the country was enough to keep their passion burning bright as ever!
