Why stop at jabbing and grappling when you can kick, punch, strike and pummel your opponent to oblivion? Welcome to the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) – a full contact combat sport that allows both striking and grappling techniques while standing and, on the ground. Separating the men from the boys, this high-octane sport is fast gaining popularity.

To nurture young talents in Malaysia’s MMA arena, Tune Talk Mobile Prepaid recently launched the Malaysian Invasion MMA Fighting Championship (MIMMA FC). This championship will see MMA fighters set the cage on fire when the mind-blowing grand finals of the MIMMA FC takes place in Kuala Lumpur on June 15, 2013.

A fast growing sport that has taken the world audience by storm, MMA combines multiple disciplines. Participants are assessed for their striking, grappling and sparring capabilities – the three key skills required for the sport, which combines multiple martial arts disciplines like karate, taekwondo, silat, muay Thai, boxing, wrestling, judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu into a single competition. Fighters at the MIMMA FC will battle it out inside a specially-designed 900 square feet metal enclosure, presided over by professional referees and judges.

With cash prizes totalling MYR150,000, MIMMA FC will be the first professionally-managed pan-Malaysian amateur fighting championship. The amateur championship is open to all Malaysians aged 18 and above. Participants will battle it out in various weight class categories: Flyweight (up to 56.7kgs), Bantamweight (up to 61.2kgs), Featherweight (up to 65.8kgs), Lightweight (up to 70.3kgs), Welterweight (up to 77.1kgs), Middleweight (up to 83.9kgs) and Light Heavyweight (up to 93kgs).

More than 500 participants turned up for the two-day preliminary try-outs held in Kuala Lumpur this February. From the try-outs, 112 participants were selected to proceed to the Ladder Match round on March 23 and 24. Quarter Finals were held on April 20 and 21 and Semi Finals on May 18. The MIMMA FC champion for each weight class will be crowned at the Grand Finals on June 15.
