Casuarina Delight

For the ultimate vacation, drop by JivaRhu Wellness & Beauty Retreat and indulge in the restorative powers of a traditional Malay massage. Lathering me with generous amounts of herbal oils, my therapist uses her thumbs and palms, and long calming strokes to gently induce blissful slumber. When I awaken an hour later, I feel refreshed and ready for a dip in the spa’s Jacuzzi. As I sip my ginger tea and bite into refreshing slices of watermelon, I enjoy the warm bubbles and ponder an extremely crucial matter – what shall I have for dinner?

With three pools – the saltwater Lagoon Pool, family-friendly Sunset Pool, and adults-only, ozonated Sands Pool, Tanjung Rhu Resort is a marvel in landscaping. Manmade ponds, complete with splashing fish and a resident monitor lizard, peek out from lush greenery, while just beyond this tropical garden, a 2.5-km stretch of white sand beckons with casuarina trees rustling in the sea breeze. The resort actually gets its name from these trees, which are known as rhu in Malay. The private beach here is perfect for a romantic stroll or a fun barbeque, and during the week leading up to the full moon, you’ll be treated to a special sandbar walk at low tide.

Although I miss this highlight, the resort has many other attractions to keep me happy. Besides aquatic yoga, nature walks and a mangrove river cruise, the resort offers kayaking, hydro biking and island hopping excursions. If you don’t want to get wet, try archery, enjoy a game of pool or curl up with a book at Reading Room.

For a truly unique experience, I pop by the Artisan Hut where the resident artists teach batik painting and wood carving. Yusra, a wood carver who has been whittling wood into artworks at the resort, patiently shows me how to carve waves on a slab of meranti wood. It looks easy when he wields the chisel, but as soon as I try, I realise just how difficult it is. Yusra tells me to enjoy the experience and assures me he will clean up my artwork when I am done.

I’m happy to spot one of Yusra’s sophisticated water-inspired carvings just above my bed in my room, the newly-refurbished Damai King room. My room comes with a balcony that’s perfect for evening cocktails, a comfortable lounge with LCD TV, and a dressing area with a floor-to- ceiling sliding door-cum-mirror leading to a spacious bathroom. In the lounge, collapsible louvred windows open onto a bathtub, so guests can watch TV while enjoying a blissful soak. Done up in earthy tones and a splash of orange and green, the room is popular with couples, and to give honeymooners a little something special, housekeeping staff often draw a bubble bath for a romantic surprise. The Damai room with its garden courtyard view is the lowest category of rooms available at the resort, so I can only imagine how fantastic the sea-facing Anjung Senja penthouse will be when it’s ready in mid to late 2014.

Currently there are only two restaurants open: Sands and The Chef’s Table. The all-day-dining Sands restaurant, which serves up local, Thai, Italian, Spanish and Middle-eastern fare, also offers Saffron’s Mediterranean menu during the day with signature dishes like the Saffron Caesar Salad tossed with salmon, baked scallops and prawns, and seafood paella. However, the true jewel in Tanjung Rhu’s culinary crown is The Rhu’s fusion fine dining menu, which is available at The Chef’s Table by the sea. Here, you can indulge in delights like Alaskan crabmeat ravioli with pink grapefruit and tomato gazpacho, fillet of cod with bittersweet fig paste, as well as juicy roasted lamb rack on a bed of green pea puree. In July, The Chef’s Table will begin serving its actual menu.
