Family Size Fun

No stranger to Bali, my love for the island is inspired by the exotic sounds of the gamelan, the idea of romance just around the corner (thank you Eat, Pray, Love!) and the warmth of Balinese hospitality.

As I entered the ornately-decorated lobby of Novotel Nusa Dua, a sign with the words ‘YOU: 24/7’ greeted me. Duty Manager Ayu, who checked me in, explained that Novotel Nusa Dua’s objective is to ensure that every guest, young or old, is well-attended to at all times.

Ten low-rise towers circled the perimeter of the five-hectare property, each named after flowers such as Carnation, Azalea and Bougainvillea. Little gardens filled with lush greenery covered the grounds with tranquil koi ponds scattered across the landscape. In the middle stood then largest swimming pool I’d ever seen. Around the pool, guests paid tribute to the sun on turquoise lounge chairs, and what I initially thought was a massage pavilion turned out to be a Junior Spa, where a little girl was having her hair braided while enjoying a manicure. A group of children dressed in adorable little chef costumes walked pass. Ayu explained that they were attending the Children’s Cooking Class where they would get to decorate cupcakes and cookies. Alternatively, kids can also spend time at the Kid’s Club while parents enjoy their day by the pool at In Balance Spa or by the beach.

I entered my one-bedroom suite, delighted by the contrasting coolness of the room compared to the island’s humidity. Mahogany-toned wooden floorings lined the suite that came equipped with a big bedroom, an obscenely large bath, a kitchenette with a family-sized refrigerator, a dining area, a living room and an outdoor terrace with great views of the pool. I could only imagine the spaciousness of the two and three-bedroom suites. So large was the three-bedroom suite, it came with its own private pool!

Ayu left me to unpack, but not before explaining that the ‘2.28 Beach Club’ was a short bus ride away. I was initially disappointed that the resort was not within walking distance to the Novotel Nusa Dua’s private beach, but soon found out that it was named after the duration the bus takes to reach the private beach: Exactly two minutes and 28 seconds! A pristine stretch of soft, powdery sand greeted me at the end of the ride. Lounge chairs and umbrellas were lined up facing the Indian Ocean, whilst a beach volleyball court, towel counter and restaurant offered all the amenities needed. The water was a divine respite from the heat, and I loved the beach’s privacy and exclusivity.

My stomach growled as I watched the sun set on the horizon. Dining options were aplenty here – from The Square, which offers breakfast buffet spreads and the casual hangout Pause Café, to the poolside chillout spot, Blue Bar, and the romantic Beach Club, where you can dine al fresco with the warm ocean breeze caressing your face.

Three days of sunbathing, swimming and poolside lounging were simply amazing. I never felt the need to venture out except for shopping, which was taken care of by the nearby Nusa Dua Bali Collective shopping area.

After hearing fellow guests wax lyrical about In Balance Spa at the hotel, I promptly booked myself a Bamboo Massage session. Using the traditional Balinese method of rolling heated bamboo onto the body to improve blood circulation, my therapist treated me to one hour of heavenly bliss. Masseuse Ri’s hands were skilfully strong yet amazingly gentle. I came out feeling rejuvenated and ready for life!

Overall, I loved the attentiveness of the staff and the colossal spaces here, where children could run free and grown-ups could enjoy some private time. Novotel Nusa Bali was indeed a great retreat with everything and anything you’ll need for the whole family.
