Spencer Lee, Head of Commercial for AirAsia Berhad says, “We are committed to grow our
network and serve the Asean community better, apart from strengthening our secondary hubs in
Malaysia. The introduction of this new route from Penang to another IndoChina city reiterates that
commitment, as we will also be celebrating the inaugural flight from Penang to Ho Chi Minh City at
the end of this month.”
“Yangon, which is Myanmar’s largest city is becoming an increasingly popular leisure destination
among travellers in the region. We are confident that the direct connectivity between both cities will
stimulate leisure and business activities, as this will be Malaysia’s second direct flight into Yangon,”
Spencer adds.
Formerly known as ‘Rangoon’ and a former capital of Myanmar, Yangon has a distinctive atmosphere
that is set to captivate the hearts of travellers. The faded charm of the colonial quarters that once
represented the height and grandeur of colonialism intertwined with an abundance of spectacular pagodas such as the Shwedagon Pagoda; covered with hundreds of gold plates and diamonds. No
visit to Yangon is complete without a glimpse into local life as you join the legion of friendly office
workers for breakfast with a comforting bowl of Ohn no Khao Swè (Chicken Coconut Noodle Soup),
making the experience to the city as authentic as possible.
The journey further out of the city is as much an adventure as the country itself. Away from
westernisation, travellers can make their way to Bagan — take the infamous hot air balloon ride at
sunset and slowly float above the Bagan plain which sits over 3000 temples and stupas which are at
least 800-years old. This is indeed one of the world’s breathtaking sights and destination to marvel in.
