Founded in 1857, Kuala Lumpur or KL is the perfect representation of the harmoniously multi-racial Malaysia. From its humble beginnings of a tin mining city, the “muddy confluence” has progressively transformed into one of the most developed capital cities of Southeast Asia. Once you are here, it’s hard to miss KL’s world-famous landmark--the soaring Petronas Twin Towers (or KLCC to the KLites), and the surrounding attractions that host cultural elements from Malay, Chinese and India--the three largest ethnics of the country. Eating out is a national pastime, and mamak (Indian Muslim food establishments) are open 24 hours a day. Jalan Alor is known for its hawker food, from chicken wings, lok lok (street food on sticks), noodles to nasi lemak, chicken rice and yummy curry. For drinks and nightlife, Changkat Bukit Bintang and Bangsar are favoured by expats and locals alike. Visit KL Tower, Central Market (Pasar Seni), Petaling Street, KLCC, Malaysia Tourism Centre and Bukit Bintang, all accessible from the free GoKL bus. Via the LRT and monorail, Berjaya Times Square, Little India and KL Sentral are quick to reach. Day trips to Gold Coast Morib, Melaka, Port Dickson, Genting Highlands, Cameron Highlands, Bukit Tinggi, Putrajaya, Batu Caves, and Sunway Lagoon are also ideal from the city centre. If you’re in town during the Formula 1 Race, come over to the Sepang International Circuit to see the fastest machines on land, and keep your eyes open for celebrations such as the Colours of 1Malaysia and Future Music Festival Asia.
