AirAsia Debuts Operations in Kualanamu International Airport

Medan, 25 July 2013 – AirAsia flight QZ 8078 from Medan to Penang marked the official debut of AirAsia’s operations in Kualanamu International Airport.

Over 100 passengers made history as the brand new Airbus A320 took off from Kualanamu International Airport at 5:15 AM local time for a flight to Penang, Malaysia.

CEO of AirAsia Indonesia Dharmadi said AirAsia’s Medan – Penang flight marked yet another milestone as the airline begins operations in Kualanamu International Airport.

“We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Government of the Republic of Indonesia and PT Angkasa Pura II on the inauguration of the new airport today. We are extremely delighted to serve our guests from one of the biggest, most sophisticated airports in South East Asia.”

Kualanamu International Airport replaces the former Polonia International Airport which had been in operation for over 85 years. The new, world-class airport is built on 1.365 hectares of land, designed to accommodate the movement of 10.000 aircraft per year. Furthermore, the airport has an annual capacity of 8 million passengers, 10 times the capacity of Polonia International Airport.

Dharmadi explained the shift to Kualanamu International Airport will allow AirAsia to further boost connectivity from Medan. The airline is set to add one more aircraft in Medan by August 2013.

“Kualanamu International Airport provides a lot more room for us to grow. We will have a total of 4 aircraft in Medan by the end of 2013, further underlining our commitment to continued expansion in the capital city of North Sumatra,” said Dharmadi.

Through Medan hub, AirAsia flies to popular domestic destinations namely Jakarta, Bandung, Pekanbaru and Surabaya. Internationally, AirAsia provides direct flights from Medan to Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Bangkok and Singapore effective 12 August 2013.

In a bid to introduce Kualanamu International Airport, AirAsia provides complimentary bilingual guidebooks to all guests jetting into Medan today. The digital version can be accessed at
