AirAsia volunteers cultivate seedlings and built rainwater harvester with Free Tree Society
KUALA LUMPUR, 19 MARCH 2016
AirAsia continued its commitment towards climate change awareness by supporting the global Earth Hour initiative with a local green event, mobilising AirAsia volunteers to plant seedlings for the Free Tree Society, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) advocating green living and energy conservation in Kuala Lumpur today.
The team of over 50 volunteers led by Ms Aireen Omar, CEO of AirAsia Berhad planted 400 seedlings, as well as built a rainwater harvester during the event.
This local green event, which is also listed on the official Earth Hour Activity Tracker website as one of the hundreds of activities taking place globally in conjunction with Earth Hour Day; is part of the AirAsia Group’s #GREEN24 movement to further educate the public about the effects of climate change, as well as to advocate climate action for a sustainable future.
In addition to the event held in Bangsar, over 17,000 AirAsia employees around the world will also be observing Earth Hour and encourage their respective communities to shine a light on climate action.
Free Tree Society, which is fully run by volunteers aims to cultivate green living through its seedling-giveaway programs with over 6,000 plants given out since its establishment in March 2012; and to promote energy conservation through activities such as teaching the public on rainwater harvesting. Apart from that, the NGO is fully run by volunteers and the public can visit its nursery in Bangsar to learn basic gardening skills, landscaping, propagation methods, vermicomposting, composting and more.
Earlier in January, the AirAsia Group initiated over 30 activities throughout its global offices across Asean and beyond which promoted energy conservation as well as public education about the effects of climate change.
In addition to that, the airline has also been actively sourcing for ways to inject the sustainability factor into its operations, including engineering, flight operations and fuel saving initiatives to reduce carbon footprint.
