To celebrate AirAsia being the Official Airline Partner of Surfing in Australia, you can now bring your surfboard for FREE* when you fly! From 1 May and until further notice, guests flying to and from Australia (either point to point or Fly-Thru) will be entitled to take 1 surfboard free of charge under the Free Surfboard Policy.

How does it work?

  • If you’ve booked an AirAsia flight departing to and from Australia, point-to-point or Fly-Thru (except i5 and DJ flights), and you have a surfboard to check in, simply turn up at our AirAsia check-in counters and our friendly staff will assist you with your one (1) complimentary surfboard check-in up to a maximum weight of 15kg.
  • Please note that you are only entitled to one (1) surfboard per passenger with a maximum weight of 15kg. It must be packed in a recognized surfboard bag and must not exceed 277cm or 109 inches in length.
  • Passengers who have paid sports equipment fee for their surfboard to travel from 1 May 2018, will be entitled to a Credit Account. Passenger must provide their BIG Loyalty ID number when submitting their claim for Credit Account via the AirAsia e-Form.

*Free Surfboard Policy:

  1. Travel Period: 1st May 2018 till further notice.
  2. Carrier Code: All carrier codes (except i5 and DJ).
  3. Destination: Flights departing to and from Australian Airports including Fly-Thru (except i5 and DJ flights).
  4. Sport equipment Fee: One (1) surfboard per passenger.
  5. Maximum weight: 15kg per surfboard. Additional weight will be charged as excess baggage. Occupational health and safety surfboard must not exceed 32kg. Surfboard weighing more will not be accepted.
  6. Check-in Requirement: Must be packed in a recognized surfboard bag and not exceed 277cm or 109 inches in length.

Definition of terms

a) Surfboard:
The following surfboards will be accepted as complimentary:
Mini-mal, longboard, fish surfboard, soft board, stand-up paddle board and body board/boogie board. Kitesurfing boards and windsurfing boards are not included.

b) Australia point-to-point flights:
Australia point to point flights refer to any flights departing to and from one of our 4 Australian ports (Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, and Perth) to Kuala Lumpur, or Perth to Denpasar (Bali). The promotion does not apply to any separate self-connecting flights from Kuala Lumpur to other destinations on our network.

  1. E.g. I booked a flight from Sydney (SYD) to Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to travel on 10 May, but I’m booked to fly from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Denpasar (DPS) in a separate booking. Am I entitled to the free sports equipment for my surfboard?
    Yes, you are entitled to one (1) free surfboard check-in up to a maximum weight of 15kg from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur but not from Kuala Lumpur to Denpasar as you have booked the 2 journeys separately.

c) Australia Fly-Thru flights:
Australia Fly-Thru flights refer to any flights departing to and from one of our 4 Australian ports (Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast and Perth) connecting to a destination (except for i5 and DJ flights) without the hassle of collecting your bags at the transit hub.

  1. E.g. I booked a Fly-Thru flight from Gold Coast (OOL) to Padang (PDG) on one (1) booking to travel on 10 May. Am I entitled to the free sports equipment for my surfboard?
    Yes, you are entitled to one (1) free surfboard check-in up to a maximum weight of 15kg as you have booked a Fly-Thru connecting flight from Gold Coast to Padang in 1 booking. Your surfboard will be checked in from Gold Coast and you can collect it when you arrive in Padang.

d) i5 flights:
i5 Flights are routes operated by AirAsia India and the flight number is prefaced by airline code i5.

e) DJ flights:
DJ Flights are routes operated by AirAsia Japan and the flight number is prefaced by airline code i5.

  1. When will this complimentary service be provided?
    The complimentary sports equipment fee for surfboard will be available from 1st May 2018 onwards.
  2. What type of surfboards are entitled to the complimentary allowance?
    Surfboards accepted as complimentary are: mini-mal, longboard, fish surfboard, soft board, stand-up paddle board and body board/boogie board. Kitesurfing boards and windsurfing boards are not included.
  3. How am I entitled to the complimentary sports equipment fee?
    Here are the requirements in order to be entitled to the complimentary service:

  4. Can I check-in more than 1 surfboard per person in one bag if it is under 15kg?
    No, you can only check in one (1) surfboard per person in one bag only. The complimentary one (1) surfboard must not exceed 15kg in weight. It must be packed in a recognized surfboard bag and not exceed 277cm or 109 inches in length.
  5. I am travelling from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Melbourne (MEL) on 5th May 2018. Am I entitled to the complimentary sport equipment fee?
    Yes, you are entitled to check-in one (1) surfboard up to 15kg complimentary.
  6. I am travelling with my surfboard and golf equipment set on a flight from Sydney (SYD) to Kuala Lumpur (KUL). Am I entitled to the complimentary sports equipment fee?
    Your surfboard will be checked-in as complimentary up to 15kg, however, your golf equipment set will be charged a sports equipment fee. Please ensure you have paid the sports equipment fee for your golf equipment set before your travel date.
  7. I am travelling on 1 May 2018 and have already paid a sports equipment fee for my surfboard. Am I entitled to a refund?
    Passengers who have paid a sports equipment fee for their surfboards for travels from 1 May 2018 onward will be entitled to a Credit Account. Passenger must provide their BIG Loyalty ID number when submitting their claim for Credit Account via e-Form.
  8. I have paid for the sports equipment fee for my surfboard on a flight from Kuala Lumpur (KUL) to Perth (PER) on 10th May 2018, am I entitled to a refund?
    We will provide you a Credit Account on the sports equipment fee that you have paid for the carriage of your surfboard up to 15kgs. You must submit your claim via our e-Form and provide us with your BIG ID account number.
  9. I am travelling from Denpasar (DPS) to Jakarta (CKG). Am I entitled to this complimentary sports equipment fee?
    No. This complimentary sports equipment fee for surfboard is only applicable for flights operating to and from any Australian airports including Fly-Thru flights (except i5 and DJ).
  10. I am flying from Phuket (HKT) to Gold Coast (OOL) via Kuala Lumpur. Am I entitled to the complimentary sports equipment fee?
    You are entitled to the complimentary sports equipment fee for your surfboard as you are on a Fly-Thru flight to Australia.
